Friedrich appliances, such as air handlers, dehumidifiers, air purifiers and more, should be cleaned regularly to maintain the best quality. Even with proper care, however, most appliances will experience a malfunction within 15 years. Before you rush to replace the appliance, it would be wise to do some troubleshooting. Many appliances can be fixed with a replacement part.

Troubleshooting Friedrich appliances
- Ice on evaporator coils—Ice on coils is a significant sign that there's something wrong with air flow or the control system. The air filter may be clogged, which will require you to replace it. There could also be grime buildup, which will need to be cleaned.
- Air purifier hisses—A noisy air purifier can be diagnosed in a couple of ways. You’ll want to first check that the bearings are adequately lubricated. If you still notice noise after doing this, the fan could be the issue. Tighten the fan on the motor shaft to cease the noise.
- Air conditioner isn't cooling enough—An air conditioner that's not cooling properly could be caused by a dirty filter. Check that there's no buildup, and then, replace as necessary. You’ll also want to make sure all air grilles are free from blockage.
- Heater won't turn on—A simple fix for a heating system not working is to ensure the setting is set to “heat.” You’ll also want to check that the fan is on.
- Heat pump isn't defrosting—Heat pumps that don't defrost will lead to icy buildup that can ruin your unit. If you find that the evaporator isn't defrosting, check that the relays, controls or sensors aren't damaged.
Critical dehumidifier parts that can malfunction
- Sensor assembly—The sensor assembly is comprised of the humidistat and the evaporator thermistor. These two components sense humidity and evaporation, sending signals to the control board. Should you find your dehumidifier isn't cycling properly, then you’ll likely need to replace the sensor assembly.
- Electronic control board—The compressor and fan are controlled by the electronic control board. This control board also turns the dehumidifier on and off to maintain level settings. Should any of these not turn on, you likely have a faulty electronic control board that needs replacement.
- User interface control board—The user interface control board is what allows you to set the humidity level on your dehumidifier. If you find you can’t press buttons on your unit, then you’ll need to replace the user interface control board.
- Compressor—The compressor is a pump that operates the evaporator to draw moisture from the air. A compressor has an overload that protects it from damage. If the overload is damaged, then the compressor can't operate properly. Test the overload with a multimeter and replace as necessary.
