HVAC system maintenance tips
Replace the air filter regularly. A dirty air filter impedes air flow through your HVAC system so it has to work harder to move air and maintain comfort in your home. Replacing the filter regularly lowers your energy costs by helping your HVAC system work efficiently. For most HVAC systems, you'll need to replace the air filter every 1 to 3 months.
Keep the drain line clear. Pour a cup of liquid bleach through the condensate drain line every month to keep the line clear of algae. An obstructed drain line can cause water damage and mold or bacteria growth in your home. If drain water backs up in your evaporator, the float switch trips and cuts off your air conditioner.
Schedule professional maintenance twice a year. HVAC checkups by a professional help keep your heating and cooling system running at its best. Routine HVAC maintenance helps prevent costly repairs and can make your HVAC system more energy efficient. Sears Home Services provides maintenance services for most major HVAC brands such as Kenmore, Carrier, Lennox, Trane and Goodman.
Troubleshooting tips for your HVAC
Check the thermostat. Make sure that your thermostat is working and that it's set at a temperature that calls for heat or cooling. Replace the thermostat if it's not working.
Check for electrical power. Check the house circuit breakers for the HVAC system to make sure they're turned on. Reset any tripped circuit breakers. Many furnaces have a seasonal cut-off switch installed next to the air handler that shuts off power to the furnace during the summer. If your furnace doesn't work, check the seasonal cut-off switch and turn that switch on if it's off.
Check for a clogged drain line. A clogged condensate drain line on a central air conditioner or heat pump will cause water to back up at the evaporator and trip the safety float switch. Clear the condensate drain line obstruction if water backed up into the evaporator and tripped the float switch.
Call for service. When basic troubleshooting steps don't work, have a service technician examine your HVAC system and repair the problem. Sears Home Services repairs most major brands of HVAC systems including Kenmore, Carrier, Rheem, Bryant, American Standard, Ruud and Trane.
