How to replace a gas grill wheel

This repair guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to replace a broken or damaged wheel in about 15 minutes. If your gas grill doesn’t roll smoothly, check for a broken or damaged wheel and replace it with a manufacturer-approved gas grill part.

These basic steps show how to replace the wheel on common Kenmore, Charbroil, Grand Hall, Weber, Nexgrill and Brinkman gas grills.

Replacing a wheel on a gas grill

This video explains how to replace a wheel on a gas grill.

Instructions

01.
Shut off the gas supply
Close the shut-off valve on the propane gas tank.
Tip: Arrows on the tank knob show which way to turn the knob to open and close the valve.

Remove the propane tank and grease cup
Release the grease cup from the hanger and pull out the cup.
Turn the hose coupling nut counterclockwise to release it from the propane tank.
Pull the propane tank out of the tank holder.

Remove the wheel
Lift the grill frame and prop it on a wood block.
Remove the cotter pin from the axle rod.
Remove mounting nut and washer from the axle rod.
Remove the wheel.

Install the new wheel
Push the new wheel onto the axle rod.
Install the washer and mounting nut on the axle rod and reinstall the cotter pin.
Remove the wood block from under the grill frame.

Reinstall the propane tank and grease cup
Position the propane tank on the frame base with the tank hose connection facing the regulator.
Lift the tank holder to secure the tank to the frame base.
Reconnect the regulator hose to the propane tank and tighten the coupling nut securely.
Reinstall the grease cup in the holder.
06.
Restore the gas supply
Open the valve on the propane gas tank.
