What to do when a surface burner won't spark or ignite on your Roper gas range

A surface burner igniter switch and a spark module activate the spark electrode when you turn the knob on a gas range's cooktop to the "light" position. If you don't hear the ticking sound of a spark jumping from the igniter electrode to the burner head when you start a burner, check the igniter electrode first. Clean the electrode if it's covered with spilled food. Replace the electrode if the ceramic insulation is broken.

If the electrode is okay, you may need to replace the igniter switch or spark module.

Top replacement parts for your Roper gas range

  • Oven temperature sensor probe. The oven temperature sensor probe detects the actual temperature in the oven cavity. Replace it if it's not detecting the temperature properly, in which case the oven doesn't maintain the temperature you set. A complete failure, in which the sensor probe doesn't detect any temperature at all, usually triggers an error code on the electronic oven control board.
  • Electronic oven control board. The electronic oven control (EOC) board governs the timing and execution of oven functions such as baking and broiling. It's usually in the control console and often has a digital clock on the front of its housing. Replace the electronic control board if it doesn't light up when it's supplied with electrical power, if it doesn't operate properly or doesn't properly send current to the oven igniter.
  • Surface burner spark igniter switch. The igniter switch is an electrical switch on the stem of the gas surface burner control valve. This switch completes a circuit to the surface burner spark module, causing the burner igniters to spark when the burner switch is turned to the Lite position. Replace the burner igniter switch if the burners don't spark when you turn the burner control knob to the Lite position or if igniters spark constantly even when the burner knobs are in the Off position.
