How to troubleshoot the defrost system
LG refrigerators depend on an automatic defrost system to periodically melt frost off evaporator fins and keep cool air flowing through freezer and refrigerator compartments. When a defrost component breaks, the freezer may stay cold but the refrigerator won’t cool as it should. You may see frost build-up on the evaporator cover in the back of the freezer compartment.
If this scenario happens to your LG refrigerator, check the defrost system. A broken defrost heating element, a blown fuse or a faulty electronic control board could be causing the defrost system failure. On many models, the Er dF code is displayed when the defrost system breaks.
To check for a broken defrost heater or blown fuse, you can unplug the refrigerator and use a multimeter to measure continuity through the defrost heater circuit from the electronic control board mounted on the back of the refrigerator cabinet. If the multimeter measures no continuity through the defrost heater circuit, a blown fuse or broken heater is causing the defrost system failure. Check the fuse and defrost heater for continuity and replace the part that has no electrical continuity.
