Troubleshooting your Ryobi lathe when it won't start

  • Check the electrical outlet that you have the lathe power cord plugged into for power. Plug a different tool into the outlet to see if the outlet has power. If the outlet is dead, reset the house circuit breaker for the outlet. If the outlet is still dead, have an electrician repair the outlet.
  • If the outlet is okay, unplug the lathe and check its power cord. Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken power cord wires.
  • Check the power switch wiring connections (with the lathe still unplugged). Reconnect any loose wires and repair any broken switch wires.
  • Check the switch for continuity when the switch is turned on using a multimeter (with the lathe still unplugged). Replace the switch if the meter measures infinite resistance with the switch in the on position.
  • Check wiring connections between the switch and drive motor. Reconnect any loose motor wires and repair any broken wires. If motor wiring is okay, you may need to replace the motor.

Safety guidelines to follow when using your Ryobi lathe

  • Read and follow all safety and operation guidelines in the owner's manual for your lathe. Make sure all operators are familiar with the lathe controls and features before use.
  • Wear tight-fitting clothes, work gloves, a dusk mask and protective eyewear when operating the lathe.
  • Don't wear a necktie or jewelry that could get caught on the lathe. Wear a protective hair covering to keep long hair out of the lathe.
  • Never operate the lathe when your tired or taking medications that could cause drowsiness.
