Common Thermar gas water heater replacement parts

  • Thermocouple. The thermocouple detects whether your pilot light is on by generating a very small electrical current powered by the heat of the pilot flame. If the gas valve assembly doesn't sense the small electrical current provided by the thermocouple, or the thermocouple cools, it assumes that the pilot light is off and shuts down the gas.
  • Gas valve assembly. The gas valve assembly monitors tank water temperature and cycles the burner on and off to maintain set water temperature.
  • Pilot and igniter assembly. The pilot and igniter assembly supplies the flame for the burner to ignite the gas and includes the thermocouple.
  • Drain valve. The drain valve fits at the bottom of the tank and allows you to drain water from the tank.

Maintenance tips for your Thermar gas water heater

  • Flush tank sediment every 6 months. It is recommended that you drain the tank and flush sediment out of the tank every six months. Sediment can build up and interfere with water heating if you don't regularly drain and flush the tank.
  • Visually inspect the vent system annually. Look for obstructions or damage to the vent system. Make sure that ventilation air paths aren't obstructed.
  • Check piping systems for leaks yearly. Repair or replace any leaking pipes or water fittings.
  • Annually inspect gas lines and the burner for damage or corrosion. Have a service technician repair any damaged gas lines or replace the gas burner if it's damaged.
