How to fix a Whirlpool dishwasher that won’t fill

Sears PartsDirect has the DIY dishwasher troubleshooting help you need to diagnose and repair your Whirlpool dishwasher when it won’t fill with water.

  • Check the door. Make sure the dishwasher door is fully shut so it latches; otherwise the dishwasher won’t fill.

  • Check the water supply. See if the dishwasher water supply valve is turned on. You can find this valve under the sink or in the basement under your dishwasher. You might be surprised at how many people shut this valve off when they go on vacation and forget to turn it back on.

  • Check the overfill float switch on the bottom of the dishwasher. Something stuck in the overfill float, also called the mushroom float, prevents the dishwasher from filling. Jiggle the float to make sure it moves freely. If you anything stuck under the float, remove it.

  • Check the inlet valve screen. Use a mirror to check for a clogged inlet water valve screen. If you can't use a mirror to check the screen, remove the mounting screw and pull the valve off the bracket.

Replace the water valve if you find the screen clogged. Debris from the clogged screen can get into the valve body, causing the valve to stick open and possibly flood your kitchen.

  • Test the water inlet valve. Measure resistance through the water inlet valve using a multimeter. The meter should measure around 1,400 ohms of resistance through the valve on most Whirlpool dishwashers.

If the multimeter measures infinite resistance, replace the water inlet valve because the electrical current won't flow through the valve.
