Troubleshooting tips for front-load Whirlpool washers that won’t spin

  • Check for error codes. Most Whirlpool front-load washers display an error code when a component failure prevents the washer from spinning. Digital control panels display a code while non-digital displays blink the lights in a pattern.

Error codes indicate the component failure that’s preventing the washer from spinning. Follow these error code troubleshooting steps to diagnose and fix the washer when it won’t spin.

  • Check the drive belt. If the drive motor runs but the spin basket doesn’t rotate, the drive belt could be broken on a belt-drive front-load washer. Unplug the washer and remove the back panel to check the drive belt. Replace the drive belt if it’s broken.

  • Check wiring connections. Loose wiring connections can prevent the washer from spinning. Unplug the washer and check the wiring connections between the control and the drive motor. Reconnect any loose wires.

Common Whirlpool washer parts that you might need to replace

  • Door lock assembly. The door on front-load washers lock to prevent you from reaching into the wash tub while the basket is spinning. The washer won’t run if the door lock assembly breaks.
  • Lid switch. Top-load washers use a lid switch to sense if the top is closed. The washer won’t spin if the lid switch detects that the washer lid is open. Replace the lid switch if it detects that the washer lid is open when it’s actually shut.
  • Electronic control board. Many Whirlpool washers use electronic control boards to control washer functions such as filling, draining and spinning. Replace the electronic control board if it doesn’t control washer functions correctly.
  • Drain pump. The drain pump removes water from the washer tub. Object such as coins in drain water can damage the drain pump’s impeller. Replace the drain pump if it runs but doesn’t pump out water.
  • Drive motor. Over time, the washer’s drive motor can wear out. The motor may begin to make whining or squealing noises when its bearings are worn down. Replace the drive motor if it makes loud noises or doesn’t run.

As is true of any appliance, eventually parts in your Whirlpool washer can break down. When they do, Sears PartsDirect has the Whirlpool repair parts you need for any washing machine repair.
