Additional Information

Steering sector gear 532136874 replaces part number 136874. This gear connects with the steering shaft to turn the wheels left or right. If your tractor has poor steering response or uneven tracking, replacing the sector gear may improve control.

Over time, wear can cause the gear teeth to slip or bind. Installing a new sector gear helps restore proper steering movement. Before starting, park the tractor on a flat surface, turn it off, and disconnect the battery. Wear work gloves and use a socket wrench and screwdriver to remove the old gear and secure the new one in place.

Check for any worn or damaged steering components while replacing the gear. Ensuring proper alignment and secure installation can help prevent future steering problems.

Exactly like the original. Which would not have worn out if other parts in the steering assembly weren't made of flimsy plastic. But I'm still happy with your parts and service. All parts in this assembly should be made of metal with zerks for greasing.

Lawn Tractor steering gear

Not too difficult for a shade-tree mechanic. Hint: Pay close attention to how things come apart.

Quality part
August 03, 2021|spiderf16, Valdosta, GA

Tractor went Nascar and would only turn left. Old Craftsman. Model #917270812 Craftsman 42" 19.5-hp electric start mower with 6-speed transaxle Figured out the teeth on the sector gear had been ground down and wouldn't catch. Part is a perfect fit. Somewhat difficult to install - do some research and find a video. Basically have to remove entire apparatus to fix this part (steering wheel all the way down to block that holds sector gear in place. I ordered a steering shaft also since I wasn't sure if those teeth were also worn down. Once I got it apart, the old steering shaft piece was in good shape but the sector gear was well worn. 1. Remove bed. 2. Remove battery and battery shelf to get to part. 3. Remove steering wheel and get down to just shaft. Attach vise grip to shaft. If you are also replacing the steering shaft you should do this piece before you put everything back together below - otherwise you might have to take it apart if you miss something. 4. Disconnect drag link from lever under sector gear. 5. Disconnect / Remove housing that holds gear and shaft together - 4 bolts underneath. 6. Remove bolt holding housing together. 7. Use hammer to separate sector gear. 8. Install new sector gear / steering shaft. Tough fit. I put the sector gear straight up with the lever pointing straight down which seemed to be the correct alignment. 9. Hammer / slide all pieces back into place. 10. Reinstall side bolt holding everything back together. 11. Reinstall 2 bolts underneath to secure housing. 12. Secure steering shaft with plastic piece that aligns shaft. 13. Check alignment of everything. If you can turn the gear all the way to the stops without coming off of the teeth, you are good to go. If not, go back to step 8. Note where you initially put the gear in relation to the lever that connects to the drag link. Move slightly in direction you need more room. 14. Tighten everything and replace battery / steering wheel.

Steering Sector - The Right Part
July 23, 2019|Tom N i M, Northern Michigan

It was relatively easy to find this atypical replacement part online and the price was reasonable. It was somewhat complex to install, but someone who is fairly handy and patient can do so do so without any training. I probably saved $200-$300 in costs at a repair shop.

Easy when you take enough apart
April 22, 2019|PoulanMan, Pittsburgh, PA

Steering was slipping severely because this gear and the steering shaft gear were quite worn. Both gears needed replaced to fix the problem. Don't be afraid to disconnect the battery, remove fuel tank, take apart the entire 3 sided dash panel, and the U shaped steering assembly bracket. My tractor is 18 years old but it all came apart and reassembled easily. I thought the parts were quite costly, but when you can't steer the tractor unless it was moving, the fix was surely needed.
