How to replace the drive belt on a Craftsman rear-tine tiller

1. Pull the spark plug wire straight up and off the plug.
2. Wear work gloves to protect your hands.
3. Remove the mounting screws that secure the drive belt cover to the tiller and pull the drive belt cover off.
4. Remove the bolts from the belt keeper behind the engine pulley and pull the belt keeper off.
5. Remove the bolt from the idler pulley and pull the idler pulley off.
6. Pull the drive belt off of the engine and transmission pulleys.
7. Position the new drive belt on the engine pulley and transmission pulley.
8. Reinstall the idler pulley with the belt routed over the idler pulley and through the belt guide. Reinstall the belt keeper behind the engine pulley. Make sure that the belt is properly routed through the belt keeper.
9. Position the drive belt cover on the side of the tiller and secure with the mounting screws.
10. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the engine and check for proper tiller operation.

1. Air filter. The tiller's air filter removes contaminants from air before it reaches the engine, to help reduce engine wear and improve efficiency.
2. Carburetor. The carburetor mixes air with fuel in the proper proportion to produce a combustible gas. That gas/air mixture is pulled into the cylinder where the piston compresses it and the spark plug ignites it.
3. Clevis pin. The clevis pin is a shear pin that couples the tines to the rotating tine shaft. The clevis pin is designed to shear off if the tines hit a fixed object during cultivation to prevent damage to the engine and other tiller components.
4. Depth stake. The depth stake is a metal stake attached to the tiller near the tines. Raise or lower the depth stake to control the tilling depth.
