Fixing common Whirlpool dryer failures
Whirlpool dryers are built to handle everyday laundry needs, but they can occasionally experience issues. Here’s how to diagnose and fix some common problems.
Won't start. If your Whirlpool dryer won't start, make sure the door is fully closed, as a loose latch may keep the dryer from starting. If the door is shut and the dryer remains unresponsive, a defective door switch, broken power cord, failed push-to-start switch, or a malfunctioning timer could be the issue. On some models, a motor relay failure can also stop the dryer from starting.
If you hear the motor running but the drum doesn’t spin, a broken drive belt is likely the culprit. Note that some Whirlpool models have a belt switch that shuts off the motor when the belt breaks, so if you don't hear any motor noise, check the drive belt. In electric models, a blown thermal fuse may be to blame; use a multimeter to test for continuity and replace it if needed.
Won't heat. A bad heater relay, a blown thermal cut-off fuse, a faulty thermistor, or a broken thermostat can all be causes when your Whirlpool dryer won't heat. In gas models, a failed thermal fuse will prevent the burner from operating properly.
Making loud noise or vibrating. If your Whirlpool dryer is making rattling noises or unusual sounds, check for items like loose zippers or small objects clanging inside the drum. If those aren't the cause, a worn drum support roller, damaged idler pulley, or loose blower fan blade may be the problem. A scraping or buzzing noise could indicate a more serious issue, like a damaged drum glide bearing or a failing drive motor.
Check for error codes when your Whirlpool dryer stops working
Modern Whirlpool dryers display error codes on the control panel when a malfunction occurs. These codes help pinpoint which component is failing. To troubleshoot an error, refer to our error code charts and diagnose the problem to find the right part for a quick repair.
