Edging tips for your MTD lawn edger

  • Edging is best performed when conditions are dry. If the ground is wet when edging, dirt gets packed around the blade which can cause excessive belt wear and interfere with blade performance.
  • If dirt does build up round the blade, stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. Remove the dirt from around the blade.
  • For deep edging, first cut a shallow trench that cut the trench deeper until the desired depth is obtained.
  • For uniform edging, run the blade guide along the edge of the sidewalk or driveway.

What to do when the blade won't spin on your MTD lawn edger

  • Check the blade belt for damage or wear. Replace the blade belt if it doesn't spin the blade pulley when you engage the blade control lever.
  • Check the blade bearings in the quill assembly. Replace the bearings or the quill assembly if you can't manually rotate the blade pulley to spin the edger blade (with the edger engine shut off)
  • Check the engine crankshaft pulley for damage. Replace the engine crankshaft pulley or shaft key if the crank shaft pulley spins freely on the crankshaft with the engine shut off.
