Won't heat

If your GE dryer won't heat, several components could be at fault. A malfunctioning timer or electronic control board might fail to send the right signals for heating. Other possible causes include a bad heater relay, blown thermal cut-off fuse, faulty thermistor, broken operating thermostat, or failed high-limit thermostat. For gas dryers, a blown thermal fuse will prevent the burner from igniting. Identify and replace the defective part to restore proper heating.

Won't start

If your GE dryer won’t start, begin by checking that the door is closed securely. When the dryer still fails to start, potential issues include a defective door switch, broken power cord, faulty push-to-start switch, or a bad timer. Some models have a motor relay, and a failure there can stop the motor from running. For electric dryers, a blown thermal fuse could also be the culprit, preventing the dryer from starting up.

Making noise or vibrating

GE dryer rattling noises might be due to items left in pockets, such as coins or keys, banging around inside the drum. If you’ve ruled out objects in the drum, the noise could come from a bad drum support roller causing a thumping sound. Other possibilities include a damaged idler pulley, bracket, or tension spring, leading to banging or squealing noises. A loud rattling might point to the blower fan blade, while scraping sounds could indicate damage to the drum glide bearing or felt drum seal. If the dryer makes a buzzing or whining noise, suspect a problem with the drive motor.

Deciphering GE dryer error codes

GE dryers with electronic controls display error codes on the control panel when there’s a component failure. These codes can help you diagnose the problem and direct you to the correct part to replace. If you see an error code, refer to our convenient error code chart for troubleshooting tips and part recommendations to repair your dryer.
